How to find Axle Ratio Dodge Ram 1500: Easy Way to Determine Axle Ratio

Before you know how to find axle ratio Dodge Ram 1500, you have to learn what axle ratio is. The number of the revolution that the driveshaft requires to make for spinning the axle one complete turn is called the axle ratio.

The number of spinning is explained in ratio. This number refers to the teeth on the ring gear and it is divided by the number of teeth on the pinion too.

We know this is very completed for you to understand. And so, we have come up with better ideas for you! Here, let us tell you how you can get the axle ratio in your Dodge Ram 1500! Let’s get in!

How to find Axle Ratio Dodge Ram 1500: Step by Step Process

Step 1: Finding the Metal tag

The first step you have to take for finding the Axle Ratio in your Dodge Ram is to find the metal tag. You might ask what the metal tag is. Let us tell you, this is the key to get the Axle ratio of your Dodge Ram. For finding this, you have to go through the rear axle carrier housing.

In the rear axle carrier housing of your Dodge Ram, you will see a metal tag. The gear ratio of your Dodge Ram is stamped on the metal tag. Keeping the gear ratio on the mind, you have to search for the Axle ratio of your vehicle.

Step 2: Placing Drive Pan

Now, you have to raise your Dodge Ram on jack stands. Be very careful while going through this step. After doing this, you have to start supporting the truck on the jack stands.

After giving it proper support, you have to move to plan the drive pan in the right place. All you have to do is to place it under the carrier housing cover carefully.

After you have positioned it properly under the carrier housing cover, you have to go for the bolts.

There will be several bolts that are 13mm. For this process, you might need a wrench. Along with this, a screwdriver will be needed for removing the bolts. Now, taking the gears, you have to move to take removing the 13mm bolts on the housing. Use a socket for this if you want to get the best result.

Step 3: Count and Count

Now that you are done with taking out the bolts on the housing, you have to count the gear ratio. We know that you might not know this process of counting the gear ratio. We will tell you how to do this.

First of all, you have to go through the tire. All you have to do is to rotate it. The rotation of the tire will tell you the gear ratio of your Dodge Ram 1500. First of all, start rotating the tire. When you are rotating it, you have to start counting.

You will see that there are teeth in the large ring gear. Here, you have to count the teeth. Keep counting the teeth in the large ring gear.

You also need to shift your importance to the small pinion gear. You will get this small pinion gear in front of the ring gear of your Dodge Ram 1500. To make the work process easy, you have to divide the smaller numbers that are there into the larger number. And the number you get will be the gear ratio of your Dodge Ram 1500.

Step 5: Cleaning the Gasket

For this step, you will need a gasket scraper. Take the gasket scrapper first. Now, with the help of the scrapper, you have to make the gasket clean. After cleaning the gasket off the cover with the scrapper, you have to move forward.

Here, you will need a clean cloth. Manage a clean cloth first so that you can clean the sealing out the edge of the cover. With the clean cloth, start cleaning.

Before starting the cleaning process, you have to take a bear of RTV sealant. Now, you have to take the sealant and place it around the outer boundary of the cover that is in the sealing area. After placing it properly around the cover, you have let it dry.

Let it get dry until it can skin over. To know if it is completely dry or not you have to touch it. If you can touch it lightly and there is no sticking with your finger at all, you have to understand that it is completely dry

Step 6: Fill Carrier with Gear Oil

Now, you have to move to the cover and install it.  While installing it, you will see several 13mm bolts there. All you have to do is install the cover first. Then you have to emphasize on tightening it. With wrench or socket, you have to tighten the bolts.

After tightening them, you will need gear oil. Taking the gear oil, you have to pour it in the carrier and fill it. This whole process is done through the access plug which is situated on the side of it. Fill is complete. You have to make it full.

To know when it is full, you have to keep an eye on the gear lube. When it fills up and the gear lube begins to run back out of the access hole of your Dodge Ram 1500, understand that the whole process is done. Now, you have filled the carrier with gear oil fully.

 Step 7:  Easy Axle Ratio

When you are finding the axle ratio of your Dodge Ram so that you can change the ratio to a different ratio, you have to think about so many things. If you are doing it in any new vehicle, you have to understand that the shift points in the transmission will change.

On the other hand, the other things that will change accordingly are the speedometer and the cruising RMP.

If you are here with a four-wheel vehicle, you have to make sure that the front ratio and the rear-ratio must agree. If you see that the number of the ratio is higher, the gearing will be lower. The vice-versa situation will happen if the opposite happens.

If you see that the gear ratio is 4.11, you must understand that for each revolution of the tire, the driveshaft will turn 4:11 times. On the contrary, if the gear ratio is 3:50, the tire will turn 3 and a half turn for each revolution.

So, all you understand here is if the number is higher, it will give more acceleration. On the other hand, if you go for smaller gear, there will be less acceleration. If you don’t want to make the process this tough, you can easily go to the label on your rear axle.

The front axle label of your Dodge Ram 1500 will be more protected than the rear one. Also, there are several links to find out the axle ratio of your dodge ram!
